Blog #74--Society 101: Non-conformism Hate--

Where is the hate coming from?

I sometimes hear people be super hateful about non-conformists, saying that they're crazy, extremists, that they should do what they're supposed to. I mean, look at all the people who voted Stephen Harper. Okay, he was good the first time around, but now, he's a pile of cogs and gears and let's get him out. Conservatives, mostly in America, are obsessed with the norm, with fitting in.  If someone dresses up everyday, like Goths like to do for example, people will stare at them and judge. Listen, conforming to a certain type of people is not freedom.
I'll give an example, because I find that they illustrate points rather well:

Conformist male: Wears jeans and shirt and goes out to buy (a little bit of) food. Is stoic, rather cold with strangers and very friendly with good acquaintences. Talks about job.

Non-conformist male: Wears whatever the hell he wants, goes wherever the it pleases him. Does not bother with social conformism and acts the way he feels toward the people he knows and doesn't.

Already sounds better eh? It gets worse. Read more by clicking the thing, it's too long for like the main page :P

Conformist female: Is cute, wears some make-up when going out (to buy a lot of food). Cooks, cleans, smells good, is friendly with everyone except other males than her own, then she must be civil. Does not really get along with other women and that's all right. Does not argue with men.

Non-conformist female: Does not care what she looks like when out to do her own things. Talks to who she wants when she wants to. Doesn't have to cook if she doesn't want and is not expected to eat salad. Cleaning obsessively is overrated and a waste of time, so let's go it when dust bunnies start invading.

Think it's over? Check this out.

Conformist male toward conformist female: He is always right and exerts power over the lesser being. It is to conform to act manly and bottle up emotions. When the come out, God forbid they would be tears, no, men get frustrated and can have violent tendencies. The conformist woman should not stand up for herself, but seek aid in a conflict, or try to have her man 'conform' in his anger. (I'm generalizing and pinpointing here, it is an example). The conformist female is insecure because she feels the need to cover up, to look good, to be nice and be friendly. When put into a situation with a conformist male, where there is no constructive speaking, no way to see outside of the box, she will only know what society has told her to do. How can you analyze a situation when you don't even know what's outside of the cage you're sitting in? Conformist females will let their boyfriends do whatever to them, while the males blame them for things like: you women are... or you made me... especially when it comes to sexual favours or actions. If a man cannot control their sexual urges, the blame is placed on the woman for being attractive. I'm sorry, what?

Non-conformists do not talk to conformists with fun and this pairing is incompatible

Non-conformist male toward non-conformist female: The non-conformist male will say what's on his mind and not be shy about his emotions. He will not bottle. The woman will take her place and stand affirmative in situations in which she is not pleased. (I'm not saying conformists don't do this, it's just in the norm as a conformist woman to act passive). There will be conflicts, for sure, existantialist stuff, hard-headed or pigheadedness, competitions to see who knows more about a subject, rage fights about conformists, but it will never end in blame, but of respect for the other's views. Non-conformists are creative and not afraid to try things and their sexuality is not blameful, but varied and colourful.

Now, yes, there is more.

Conformist male toward non-conformist male: Automatic judgement, right? A conformist (adult) will see a goth (supposedly) and think, hmm... he must be a satanist, love metal, be hippie, etc. This so called, long-haired man is actually an atheist who loves classical music and enjoys spending money on expensive furniture, what, he can be luxurious! But no! He's a metal satanist who doesn't wash and plans on killing people. And that makes him a threat. He is a threat to the conformist because he is different, and unpredictable and it scares him, but of course, he's going to turn that threat into another kind of less-girly emotion. Conformists only try to be friends with other conformist to talk about their boring conformist stuff.

Non-conformist female toward conformist female: Shaking things up here. Non-co women look at conformist women with disdain (or passivity), but I'm going to go with the disdain. I know. I have it sometimes without wanting to. When a woman comes up to me and starts talking about what she did yesternight at the party and how this guy lifted her up and he was so strong and ''I drank a bottle of vodka and I puked everywhere'', I'm sorry, I don't give a flying fuck. Non-co dislike co females because they cake-on make-up and pretend to be super models by wearing heels and try to attract people by being physically attractive. Passive co women are so in love with their men, without them they would be nothing. Status updates like: I have the best boyfriend in the wooooooorld!!! for something like, they cooked you a meal -_- please! It's weird that there should be so much hate, but there is and it's not from the conformist type (co girls don't care about non-co girls, they'll judge, but they'll often ignore).
ONCE MORE... I'm generalizing and giving my personal experience of this, and so don't be all like gnneee you said this about this and it's wroonnngg!!! Please, let's be civil, mature people here.

All right, I'll stop now, because I might be offending someone. It's not what I wanted. I'm trying to be objective about it, but this is one of my more deluded blogs, but I was so ANGRY at people out there. Pro-lifers, zealously religious people who think they're living. That's not what life is. Ugh. I'm sorry, I'm showing disgust, but I must express it. I have nothing against religious people, but don't shove your views in my face, keep 'em for yourself. All right, signing off!

  1. Thing is this post isn't objective at all. It's completely subjective. It's interesting because it provides a kind of lens for the reader to sort of understand how you see certain people. The problem is the people you describe sound like two-dimensional caricatures. People are more complex than that. One type of person might exhibit tendencies that another would, etc.

  2. ^ Indeed. While those events do have a bit more tenancy in what one would consider a conforming or non-conforming person (exactly what that criteria is, I do not know), correlation is not causation in this case. I have met people who, I would consider 'conforming' (very subjective, I know), but, they let their emotions show for example. I've seen instances of every case presented in the post, but the people's characteristics were more diverse and many people exhibit behaviours that contradict some of the aforementioned cases.

However, while this post is subjective and uses fairly simple characteristics to generalize the population, I fell it quite nicely illustrates and introduces the complex and complete version of the phenomenon. After all, it's Society 101, not 401 ;)
